Institute of Humanities Pamiri linguists in partnership with UCAs Cultural and Heritage Humanities Unite have collected data in Afghanistan to develop a multilingual dictionary for the following endangered langueges: Wakhi, Ishkashimi, Sanglechi and Rushani.
The application serves as a resource to protect the distinctive languages and cultures of the Pamir region of Afghan-Badakhshan (part of Greater Badakhshan before its division by the British and Russian Empires).
The Pamiri languages form an essential part of, and serve as a means of expression for, the distinctive philosophical thought, music, architecture, handicrafts and rituals of Pamiri communities.
UNESCO already deems the Pamiri languages to be endangered, with some (Munji, 2,000 speakers and Sanglechi, 2,500 speakers) identified as severely endangered (UNESCO, 2017).
Others, such as Sarghulami, are already extinct.
