WECOHAS whose initials stand for Western Community Health
Association was founded and registered as a Community Based
Organisation in 2017 as Wecohas Company Limited and later to be
converted into a Trust.
Its principal purpose is to spearhead health care and the socio economic
development of the inhabitants of western Kenya both local and those in
the diaspora but with roots in the counties of Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega,
Trans Nzoia and Vihiga.
The socio economic aspect is carried out through the establishment and
management of Income Generating Projects (IGPs) into which inhabitants
contribute to invest by buying primary and secondary shares which
become operational when the projects are fully functional.
It also
operates in partnership with local and international development partners/
investors that include technical and material support by County
Governments in some of its projects.
The ongoing flagship project is the Cancer Hospital Institute which is to
be based in Kakamega County with branches in all the 5 Counties, and
financially supported by community contributions plus both foreign and
local investors.
Other projects include: WECOHAS Coffee Farmers
Cooperatives Society, Water bottling project (WECOMAJI), Wecohas
Gold & Minerals Cooperative, Orthopaedic project at Lugulu Hospital in
Bungoma County, Wecohas Transport Cooperative in Vihiga County,
Universal Health Insurance project in Trans Nzoia County and a the
development of a deposit taking Micro Finance.
Future projects will be established after feasibility studies with regard to
demand, long term viability and sustainability.
Because of the long term
county-specific nature of project existence, WECOHAS was reestablished
as a Trust and as body Corporate with Perpetual
Succession under Cap 164 of the Laws of Kenya in February2021 and
is due to be incorporated through certificate of incorporation.
It is currently managed by a Founder Trust Director, Founder Trust
Patrons, the Executive Board of 8 Principal Trustees, 5 Chapter Trustees in
each county and 3-5 project Board of Trustees in each project who in turn
set up a Project Management Board of professionals that are expected to
manage day to day project activities.
The principal trustees together with heads of the five chapters have been
identified and trained appropriately and will in turn continue to train other
trustees as may be identified according to need from time to time.
The
Trust shall hold and manage tangible and non-tangible assets for its
beneficiaries as defined in the Trust Deed and its declared objects.
It is
envisaged that all inhabitants will benefit from ownership of these
projects.
