The Five Lives app provides access to a digital coach for brain health to help you assess your future risk of dementia and to track and guide you on how to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Upon using the brain health digital coach you will be provided with a risk assessment tool to assess your future risk of dementia which is based on a series of demographic, health and lifestyle questions.
After completion of this initial assessment there is the option to complete a set of cognitive tests to receive further insights.
This can be followed up with further assessments every three months to assess your brain health over time.
Upon completion of an assessment, your results will comprise of three elements:
1.
The Brain Health Score reflects your risk of developing dementia in the next 10 years and indicates how healthy you are relative to your dementia risk.
It is based on a machine learning algorithm developed using data provided by the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center.
2.
Lifestyle scores for diet, physical activity, sleep, stress & mood and mental stimulation.
3.
A personalised list of risk factors for dementia.
After completing the first assessment you will also be able to track and monitor your lifestyle habits on an ongoing basis, including receiving information about how you can lead a healthier life.
Who can use the app?
The Five Lives app is suitable to be used by people who are 50-69 years old who have not been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia.
What is dementia?
Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms including memory loss, confusion, mood changes and eventually difficulty with day-to-day tasks (ARUK).
Worldwide, there are around 55 million people with dementia, with the number of patients affected set to more than double by 2050 (WHO Report, 2020).
In 2019, dementia ranked as the 7th leading cause of death.
Alzheimers disease and other dementias are in the medical top 10 causes of death without a cure available (WHO Report, 2020; NHS).
Why is it important to identify your risk of dementia early on?
1.
There is a higher chance that interventions and lifestyle improvements will be effective with an early diagnosis (SCIE, 2020)
2.
If prevention methods are introduced early enough, there is a chance of reducing the prevalence of dementia at the population level.
In a recent academic article (Livingston et al., 2020), it was suggested that modifying 12 risk factors including physical activity and alcohol consumption might prevent or delay up to 40% of dementia cases.
