Real Time Soccer Speed is an app that measures the soccer ball speed in real time (it says the measured speed of a ball flying in front of the smartphone camera, without any human intervention).
It is intended as a training tool, to be used to test/improve shooting technique and to monitor improvements in time.
Note that in order to work properly it should be used in the right conditions and following the correct instructions.
Ideal conditions:
- outdoor with good natural light;
- sun lateral or (better) behind (not in front of the smartphone; it should never be included in the camera view);
- smartphone on the ground (or on a support), with the back camera pointing to the sky in the region of the ball trajectory;
- no moving objects/people in the camera view (the ball recognition is based on movement recognition).
Poor light conditions could prevent successful speed measurement.
Artificial light usually does not allow a correct measurement.
In some cases, however, it works (it depends on quality and intensity of the light).
The app uses image recognition/processing techniques which require good hardware and an updated/complete version of Android OS (minimum Android 8.0, Oreo).
Protect the smartphone from being hit (and potentially damaged) by the ball, for example by putting a bag between the phone and the ball trajectory.
Be sure, however, to avoid that the protective object obstruct the view of the camera.
Protect the smartphone from direct sun rays, in order to avoid overheating.
This app is intended to be used for a soccer ball.
