InstaLearn is an educational application especially designed to aid in the learning process of intellectually disabled children.
Furthermore, this application helps children with intellectual disabilities to communicate more effectively and share their views and opinions with greater ease.
The focus of the app lies in building a basic vocabulary of commonly-used words for the children in a variety of topics such as Colors, Body Parts, Animals and Community Helpers, just to name a few.
Each section also contains images for each corresponding word along with a voice-over that pronounces the word.
Thus students can also learn visually, which is proven to enhance the knowledge-acquisition process, and successfully identify and understand frequently used words while engaging in conversation.
The application opens with the Home Page that displays several topics, each having a representative pictorial depiction.
On selecting a topic, the user is offered three modes: List, Flashcard & Quiz.
The List mode, as its name suggests, is a list of all the vocabulary with corresponding pictures and voice-overs.
This mode can be utilized by the teacher/parent to gain an overview of the content in a particular topic.
Next, the Flashcard mode serves the purpose of letting the student learn by zooming into one word only to enable concentrated attention on it.
Lastly, there is a fun Multi-choice Quiz section to test the progress of the student in the topic.
This section is modeled in such a manner that it has questions of increasing difficulty; hence intellectually disabled children throughout the spectrum can use it.
The questions progress from a relatively simple exercise of matching the identical images to a harder exercise of matching the image to the correct word and finally with the hardest task of matching the audio to the correct word.
The App would also help teachers & volunteers to understand what a child with limited or no oral ability is trying to communicate.
The child could press the appropriate picture of the element, and the App would speak out aloud the word corresponding to the picture.
