What is IFTA?
IFTA is a cooperative agreement between 48 of the US states, also including 10 provinces within Canada.
This agreement allows drivers to singly report and pay fuel taxes for their vehicles inter-jurisdictionally consumed across states using a single fuel tax license.
IFTA has established consistency and regulation to fuel tax payments between constituent member states IFTA according to reported estimates saves the trucking businesses annually millions of dollars in administrative fees and costs.
All the states except for Alaska, District of Columbia and Hawaii are included in the 48 cooperating states.
The 10 Canada provinces include Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
Who is Required to have IFTA?
ALL carriers based in the constituent states that operate over two or more constituent jurisdictions need an IFTA License.
The type of vehicle matters, a vehicle that is used to transport people or property/goods are considered a qualified motor vehicle by IFTA.
Qualified motor vehicles must also meet the following requirements: Any vehicle with two axles and a gross vehicle weight of over 11,797 kilograms or 26,000 pounds A vehicle of any weight but with three or more axles A vehicle that exceeds 11,797 kilograms or 26,000 pounds
