The development of the Small Serbian-Albanian / Albanian-Serbian Childrens Dictionary is the result of fruitful cooperation between the OSCE HCNM and the Government Office of the Co-ordination body for the municipalities Bujanovac, Preevo and Medvea, with the help of a team of experts from Novi Sad, Tirana, Belgrade, Pristina and Bujanovac.

The Small Dictionary was conceived with the intention to serve as an additional educational tool for learning Serbian as a non-mother tongue, intended for children who live in homogenous ethnic Albanian communities, with Albanian as a mother tongue, and minimal to no knowledge of the Serbian language.
Research conducted identified that while there are several editions of Albanian-Serbian dictionaries, there is none that is adjusted to the needs of primary school children content-wise.
This Small Dictionary, with its choice of words and lexemes, is in accordance with the needs of its users elementary school children.
However, it can also be used by adults in the process of learning the Serbian or Albanian language.

This Small Dictionary contains over 6500 lexemes necessary to gain basic knowledge of the Serbian language and its everyday use, with around 500 illustrations and examples of words used in sentences, along with audio recordings of each entry.

The authors of the Small Dictionary chose words that represent the basics of the Serbian language, such as nouns for the parts of the body, processes and inherent human activities.
The list further includes thematic fields such as surroundings, family relations, everyday activities, school and work related duties, house works, shopping, information, health and hygiene,

education, hobbies, social life,

human relationships, and food and drinks.

The entries in the Small Dictionary are excerpted from appropriate textbooks and existing lexicographic material.
The Small Dictionary also devotes attention to the individual units that have linguo-cultural value.
They are presented at the periphery of the lexicon and marked as historicisms, archaisms, poetic, etc.
In addition, the dictionary also provides basic grammar information relevant to its future users.
