Very shortly before the track was released, Kanye had taken to Twitter to announce it.
"Lift Yourself" is built around a beat sampled from the 1973 soul song "Liberty" by the group Amnesty, the vocals of which dominate the first half of the song.
West appears in the second half, rapping nonsense words like "scoopty poopty", after which the song abruptly ends.
This was possibly a tongue-in-cheek statement directed at Ebro Darden, a radio disc jockey for WQHT Hot 97, who had recently criticized West for his vocal support of President Donald Trump.
West had called him out on Twitter, promising a song that would "bring Ebro the closure he's been seeking".It is uncertain whether or not the song will be on Kanye's upcoming album Love Everyone, since he hasn't revealed any of the track listing yet.
